When Christian call Jesus God, it is important to know that they don't mean simply divine or some form of elevated or evolved status. They mean that Jesus possesses attributes that the Bible teaches only belongs to the Almighty Creator of the Universe. In John 17:5, Jesus says: > [!bible]+ [John 17:5 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/43/17/) > 5. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. We will take a look at some of the attributes of this shared glory below. # All Powerful, Knowing, Present > [!Warning]- Omnipresent > Jesus’ omnipresence is illustrated by His promises and actions. For example in the Gospel Of Matthew Jesus declares that He will be with His Disciples where-ever they go. Jesus in John even clarifies that He and The Father dwell in the hearts of every believer. > >>[!bible]+ [Matthew 28:19-20 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/40/28/) > 19. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” > >> [!bible]+ [John 14:20-23 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/43/14/) > 20. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22. Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23. Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. > >Paul also affirmed this in Colossians and Ephesians: >> [!bible]+ [Colossians 1:27 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/51/1/) > 27. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. > >> [!bible]+ [Ephesians 1:19-23 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/49/1/) > 19. and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20. that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21. far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23. which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. > In other words, Jesus died, resurrected, and ascended into heaven, and his presence fills everywhere in heaven and on earth and in the hearts of every believer. > [!Info]- Omniscient > Peter is one of the first people to claim that Jesus knows all things, stating: > >> [!bible]+ [John 21:17 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/43/21/) > 17. He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, **you know everything**; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. > >This claim is backed up by the rest of the bible, Jesus displays divine knowledge in multiple instances. Examples include His knowledge of people's thoughts ([Matthew 9:4](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.9.4), [Mark 2:6-8](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MRK.2.6-8)), His foreknowledge of events ([Matthew 24:35](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.24.35)), and His understanding of future occurrences ([John 2:22](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.2.22); [14:29](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.14.29); [16:4](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.16.4); [18:32](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.18.32); [21:23](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.21.23)). > >[[Lincoln2019-cr|Andrew T. Lincoln]] shows us that In the Old Testament, only God is shown to have this power and being able to predict the future is His alone ([Isaiah 41:21-23](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/ISA.41.21-23), [42:9](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/ISA.42.9), [43:8-13](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/ISA.43.8-13), [44:7-8](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/ISA.44.7-8), [46:10](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/ISA.46.10)). God give a challenge for anyone to come forth and show that they are God by knowing the future. In [Revelation 2:18-23](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/REV.2.18-23), we find that Jesus says that his judgement on Jezebel will show the churches that He is the one that searches the mind and heart: > >>[!bible]+ [Revelation 2:18-23 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/66/2/) > 18. “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19. “‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. 20. But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21. I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22. Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, 23. and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that **I am he who searches mind and heart**, and I will give to each of you according to your works. %% #Revelation %% > >Jesus did not make this claim in isolation, once again the Old Testament ideas of who God is and what He can do are being applied by Jesus. In 1 Kings and Jeremiah we see that God is the *only* one that can search the hearts and minds of mankind. > >> [!bible]+ [1 Kings 8:39 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/11/8/) > 39. then hear in heaven your dwelling place and forgive and act and render to each whose heart you know, according to all his ways (for you, **you only**, know the hearts of all the children of mankind), %% #1Kings %% > >> [!bible]+ [Jeremiah 17:10 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/24/17/) > 10. “**I the LORD search the heart and test the mind**, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” %% #Jeremiah %% > > [!Danger]- Omnipotent > >In the Old Testament, the omnipotence of God is repeatedly showcased through His creation, sustenance, and miraculous interventions in human history. [Genesis 1](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/GEN.1) portrays God speaking the universe into existence, highlighting His supreme power over all creation. The Psalms frequently celebrate His might and control over the natural world, with [Psalm 135:6-7](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/PSA.135.6-7) asserting, > >> [!bible]+ [Psalm 135:6-7 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/19/135/) > 6. Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. 7. He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth, who makes lightnings for the rain and brings forth the wind from his storehouses. > >The narrative in [Exodus 14:21-22](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/EXO.14.21-22), where God parts the Red Sea, demonstrate His unparalleled authority over nature and ability to deliver His people. God's interactions with individuals like Abraham in [Genesis 17:1](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/GEN.17.1), where He introduces Himself as "God Almighty," and His response to Job in [Job 38](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JOB.38)-41, where He questions Job from the whirlwind. The prophets, especially Isaiah, portray God as the sovereign ruler of nations and history, emphasizing His unmatched strength and control over all events and entities. > >The Gospels are replete with instances where Jesus demonstrates divine sovereignty over nature as God. He calms storms ([Matthew 8:23-27](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.8.23-27)) just as God did in Exodus. In the Old Testament, God provides manna from heaven to feed the Israelites in the wilderness ([Exodus 16:14-35](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/EXO.16.14-35)). Similarly, in the New Testament, Jesus multiplies loaves of bread to feed thousands of people ( [Matthew 14:13-21](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.14.13-21), [15:32-39](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.15.32-39)). Jesus not only walks on water ( [Matthew 14:25-26](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.14.25-26)) but also turns water into wine at the Cana wedding ([John 2:7-9](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.2.7-9)), mirroring God's provision in the desert ([Exodus 17:5-6](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/EXO.17.5-6)). In [2 Kings 5](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/2KI.5), Elisha instructs Naaman to wash in the Jordan River to be healed of leprosy, an act of God's healing through obedience. In the New Testament, Jesus heals lepers directly, demonstrating His authority over disease and impurity ([Matthew 8:2-3](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.8.2-3), [Luke 17:12-14](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/LUK.17.12-14)). In [John 2:19-22](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.2.19-22), Jesus speaks of His power to raise Himself from the dead, a feat only possible through divine power ( [Ephesians 1:19-21](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/EPH.1.19-21)). These events reveal His authority over the natural world. > >And this is just the beginning of the power of Jesus. The Bible teaches that: > >#### All things are held together in Jesus: > >> [!bible]+ [Colossians 1:17 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/51/1/) > 17. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. > >#### Jesus upholds the universe by the word of his power: > >> [!bible]+ [Hebrews 1:3 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/58/1/) > 3. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, > >#### Jesus’ power enables him to subject all things to himself: > >> [!bible]+ [Philippians 3:20 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/50/3/) > 20. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, > >#### Jesus Is THE Creator > >> [!danger]- Jesus is shown to be the one that created Heaven and Earth > ![[Jesus Is The Creator]] > > [!Done]- Eternal/Unchangeable > Jesus' eternal nature is highlighted across several passages, affirming His existence beyond time. In John 1:1-3, Jesus is proclaimed to be with God in the beginning. > >> [!bible]+ [John 1:1-3 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/43/1/) > 1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2. He was in the beginning with God. 3. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. > >This is further emphasized in [[John 8:56-59](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.8.56-59)](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.8.56-59), where Jesus claims to have been alive before Abraham was. Jesus claims to be life itself in [John 5:26](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.5.26) and Jesus says that He had glory with the father before all of creation in [John 17:5](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.17.5). The rest of the New Testament teaches that creation was made by and though Jesus ( [Colossians 1:16-17](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/COL.1.16-17) and [Hebrews 1:2](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/HEB.1.2), [1:10-12](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/HEB.1.10-12)). [Luke 1:33](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/LUK.1.33), [Ephesians 1:19-21](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/EPH.1.19-21), and [Revelation 11:15](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/REV.11.15), further assert the Jesus will never end and His reign will never end. > >The book of Hebrews puts it simply that Jesus is forever and unchanging. >> [!bible]+ [Hebrews 13:8 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/58/13/) > 8. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. > >> [!bible]+ [Hebrews 7:3 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/58/7/) > 3. He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever. > [!Danger]- Love > [!success]- Incomprehensible > In [Matthew 11:25-27](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.11.25-27), Jesus acknowledges that His true nature and divine identity are beyond human comprehension. This recognition of His incomprehensibility aligns with Yahweh ([Job 37:16](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JOB.37.16), [Isaiah 40:28](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/ISA.40.28)). This aspect of incomprehensibility is a characteristic traditionally attributed to Yahweh in the Old Testament. The magnificence and mysteries of God's creation are beyond human grasp: > >> [!bible]+ [Job 37:16 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/18/37/) > 16. Do you know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge, > >Similarly, [Isaiah 40:28](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/ISA.40.28) declares, > >> [!bible]+ [Isaiah 40:28 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/23/40/) > 28. Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. > >These verses show that God's ways and thoughts are far beyond human capacity to fully understand or explain. In [Matthew 11:25-27](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/MAT.11.25-27), Jesus claims to know God's ways and thoughts, stating: > >> [!bible]+ [Matthew 11:25-27 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/40/11/) > 25. At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26. yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. > >The New Testament elaborates further on Jesus' incomprehensibility through verses like [Colossians 2:2-3](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/COL.2.2-3), which states, > >> [!bible]+ [Colossians 2:2-3 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/51/2/) > 2. that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ, 3. in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. > >Similarly, 1 Timothy reflects on the mystery of godliness, saying, > >> [!bible]+ [1 Timothy 3:16 - ESV](https://bolls.life/ESV/54/3/) > 16. Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. > >Just as the understanding of God's nature and His ways are beyond human comprehension, so too is the true nature and identity of Jesus. This parallels not only emphasizes the shared divine characteristics between the Father and the Son but also underlines the depth of the mystery that envelops the nature of God as revealed in Christ. Jesus' love for us is magnified by His almighty nature as depicted in the New Testament. God became man and stood in our place so that we may be saved. What wonderful, everlasting love from the creator of heaven and earth. >[!Bible] [Romans 8:35-39 ESV](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/ROM.8.35-39) >Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, > >“For your sake we are being killed all the day long; >we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” > >No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
