According to Jewish law, it was required that those hung on trees to die were to be buried the same day ([[Evans2005-ey]]). This can be seen in passages of the Torah like [Deuteronomy 21:22-23](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/DEU.21.22-23). When Roman would crucify victims in Israel the Jew would see it has being the sign of being accursed by God ([[Evans2009-ef]]). The New Testament even says this [Galatians 3:13](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/GAL.3.13). It was important for Jew that any that were killed to be buried and not have them hanging on the Sabbath, the Gospels record this in [John 19:31](https://www.bible.com/bible/59/JHN.19.31). Josephus even tells us that Jews would take down crucified victims and bury them before the sun went down. And Philo records in his writing that It was considered virtuous to bury the dead. Additional works like the [[Littman2008-mc|[Tobit]], [[English1966-uc|Tractate]] and the [[Vermes2004-tj|Dead Sea Scrolls]] also support the burial of crucified victims ([[McCane2003-rg]]).
It is true that during the time of Jesus Israel was under was under Roman occupation. But the evidence shows that Romans would allow most local customs and laws the did not interfere with their own, see [[The Relationship Of Roman And Jewish Law]].
